What is Music Therapy?
The Australian Music Therapy association defines music therapy as "a research-based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well-being. It can help people of all ages to manage their physical and mental health and enhance their quality of life."
In other words, music therapy uses music to achieve specific non-musical, therapeutic goals. This is the difference between Music Therapy and music education or music entertainment.
Music Therapy can be used to address emotional, cognitive, physical, social or communicative needs.
Music Therapy is used in a wide variety of health sectors including hospitals, aged care facilities, facilities for the disabled and psychiatric clinics. Music Therapy is also used widely in schools and early learning centers and other learning institutions, as well in the community. In addition, Music Therapy can often be found in private practices.
For further reading, here is the Australian Music Therapy Association (in English), and the French Federation of Music Therapists (in French).

What is a Music Therapist?
A Music Therapist is both a therapist and a musician who has completed a tertiary music therapy degree, as well as extensive studies in music practice.
This means that Music Therapists are highly qualified musicians, therapists and clinicians with knowledge covering subjects such as music study, music therapy, and developmental psychology across the life span.
In Australia, music therapists are registered, holding the title RMT. In France, music therapists do not have to be registered with an accrediting body. However many music therapists are registered with the French Federation of Music Therapists which attest to their level of study, professional experiences and therefore clinical capacity.
